Conversations with people attending Waltham Forest Earth Day on SaturdayApril 20th 2024
Waltham Forest Earth Day is there to provide an opportunity for all of us to discuss the state of the planet as well as our hopes and fears for the future. Everybody was welcomed to the town square to make their views known and at least a hundred, many of them members of environmental, libertarian, social equality or anti-war pressure groups took up the offer.
We were pleased to be there to offer them a small additional platform from which to speak for themselves.
The organisers have explained their aims for the event as follows:
Times are tough. For lots of people, in lots of different ways. But these problems are connected. From our rising energy bills to sewage in our rivers, the old ways of doing things aren’t working anymore.
But there is an alternative. By taking action on the climate and nature crisis, we can also secure green jobs, warmer homes, cleaner air, healthier food, lower energy bills, more green spaces, affordable public transport… a fairer society for all.
We can’t do this alone, we need action from those in power.
We live in a borough with a strong community and many local groups supporting each other. A few of us got together to organise an event for Earth Day, to demand more action on the biggest problems we face.
Join us to share your hopes and fears for our shared home. There will be creative activities and a chance to get your voice heard. Everyone’s welcome.
