If you ask any fan of horror films, whether a critic or an ordinary member of the public, what they consider the most terrifying horror film ever made their answer nine times out of ten will be The Exorcist.
This acclaimed documentary presented by writer Mark Kermode was originally aired in 1998 to mark the 25th anniversary of the The Exorcist's 1973 release, when it became an immediate cultural phenomenon. It has remained such to the present day, despite later technical devlopments in areas like CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) and Surround Sound. In fact Kermode believes that part of the reason for the exceptional power of the special effects is that they were not added in post production: the actors and crew saw and heard exactly the same things that they were filming. Their reactions were real.
This documentary tells the story of The Exorcist's creation and describes how audiences reacted to it. Interviews with cast and crew are included. The commentary contains many spoilers so if you have not seen The Exorcist I would strongly recommend doing so before viewing this documentary.
